One Year On . . . .

Well – yesterday was our 1st anniversary. . . already! To be honest, time has flown by so fast it is scary – but they say time flies when you’re having fun.

Amazing to think that 1 year ago – I had one of the best days of my life, and a year later. . . it still feels good.

Quite a quiet day in the end (wife could NOT decide what she wanted to do) – but we did visit the place where we had our reception. Nice walk around there and a few memories as well. To think that this time last year we were on our way to Mexico is what really sucks!! 🙂

Well – 1 year down . . .many more to go – if she’s lucky of course! :)).

One Gallon Down!

Well my first gallon of white wine is finished, bottled and one bottle less already!

It is quite light, and lacks vinosity (wine body flavour) – which will be easily resolved in the next batch I intend to start tonight. Going to do some minor changes on this one – intend to use white wine concentrate (200ml) in one and raisens in the other. This should help add some “grunt” to it 🙂

I need more DJ’s tho . . .currenly I’m running 4 on the go each time. The two gallons of cider have all been drunk! I need more of that on the go as well!!!

The Cider turned out great to be honest. The cheapy plain one tasted loads better than the previous scrumpy wanna be. The one with honey in just had that little addition that was nice to be honest.

Anyway – 2nd gallon of wine is now ready be bottled. I’m hoping to leave them for as long as I can to let them mature.

I’ve also started a Rose – that is nearly ready to be racked into another DJ. Very fruity flavour. . not 100% sure if it is for me or not. . .will wait till it has matured a bit.

So – if anyone is interested. . here is what the whites DID look like – and the gallon that is ready for bottling today 🙂

. . .and after clearing. . .

Naked!

. . .is exactly how it felt! My internet connection died . . .and suddenly you realise how much you need it, want it etc etc. I hated it!!!

I was grateful it was backup after a couple of days – it is silly in so many ways how it affects you!

IT . . .IS . . . FINISHED!

. . .and once it is tidy – I’ll have photos to prove it!

Plinths done now, skirting board done. . .just tidy up bits for me to finish (ie sealant/caulking) but nothing major. Still got one loose tile + doors to replace. . but the main bit . . the actual KITCHEN . . is finished! 7 weeks is all it took – only SEVEN! Not the 2-3 expected. . .

But it is done and that is the most important thing. Just need to keep it nice/clean and tidy – yeh like that is gonna happen 🙂

I’ll take some finished photos today – and put them up. Overall I’m happy with it – few niggles but nothing major. Definately need a tumble dryer as the big hole waiting for it keeps staring at me!

“I am a cider drinker . . . .”

Well my plum wine is still bubbling away – I measured the gravity of it at the beginning of the week (1050) and that basically means 2 things. It must have been VERY sweet when I started. . . and has a long long way to go! By the instructions – another week and I should start to add the other bits. Thankfully, after reading up I know that I need to let it ferment down a LOT lower than it is (somewhere just below 1.000 if possible).

So – after scouring forums and learning – I’ve found you can make “Turbo Cider” using apple juice from supermarkets.

Simply – put in 3 litres of apple juice into a demi john, add yeast, leave for 36 hours, add in another 1.5ltrs and let it “ferment out” then bottle. Put in half a tsp of sugar per half pint or something to make it fizzy.

Well – I wasn’t sure what sort of apple juice – so we got the pure non concentrate stuff. Which is a shame because it is cloudy and – well it isn’t going to be that turbo . . it kinda goes a little slow 🙂 Lessons learned there. Next batch will be done with cheapy tesco value “made from concentrate” stuff.

Will keep you updated!

Well – Still . . .waiting. .

Hopefully today will be the final bit of the kitchen. Today – the plinths should go on . . . which finally draws a line under the whole thing!

Then photo’s – summary – and a vow to NEVER do this again!

We do have one loose tile which needs fixing. . .but I can live with that for the short term.

So – fingers crossed, if it isn’t today it won’t be for a couple of weeks as the builders are going on vacation. . .

Bubble Bubble . . .

The wine is fermenting nicely at the moment – just given it a little “push down” to move the pulp floating towards the bottom and got some nice hissing and bubbles. Also – hoping that it keeps its colour, as it looks GREAT 🙂 It is a nice pink colour at the moment, and if it stays that way (and clears that way) will look like a great bottle of rose wine 🙂

Smell wise – well . . it smells nice to be honest. Very fruity. I had a quick dip of the finger as well . . and taste isn’t too bad. If it “improves” from this point – could end up a great little thing. I’ve got about enough plums to make another two lots of this, so once I’ve moved this into the big glass jar I’m going to make a decision about the rest. If I think this is going to be nice – time to buy some more big glass jars (only £2.50ish each) and two more packs to make the wine with and make 2 gallons worth!!!

That will give me a total of 18 bottles of wine in about 6-8 weeks.

I’ll get some more photos at the next stage 🙂

Lessons Learned

Was skimming through my blog and suddenly thought – I’m not really using categories. . .so out of the 2 or 3 people that may read this blog – they can’t just look up the kitchen whine or my wine making exploits. So I’ve now gone through ALL posts and setup some new categories *points to the right had column where categories are* 🙂

Whine – or wine!

Well after all my whining about the kitchen – I’ve decided to use some of the new space. . .to make wine 🙂

Out in the garden we have a large plum tree – which was FULL of plums.

Now – I’ve always wanted to make wine (and beer . . . ) but never got round to it. But seemed a silly waste of plums to just let them fall on the floor (and attract more wasps!) So to that end – I spent 30 mins collecting about 5KG of plums, washed and de stoned them. . .then whacked em in the freezer.

Today – I’ve bought the basics I need to start making wine. . .and tonight – I start!

I’ll keep it updated here (perhaps even with the odd photo WOW!).

. . .and not today. . .

Well the tiler called yesterday saying his current job has overun which means he can’t come and do ours. . .it will be this week. . but he doesn’t know when. ARRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Phew – feel a little better now.

Still hoping it will be finished this weekend, so we can finish putting all the bits back in ready for a party!
